A number of students are …（多くの生徒が…）／The number of students is …（生徒の数が…）。同じ number of でも、a なら複数扱い、the なら単数扱い。カギは「主語の核はどれか」です。
Q. A number of students と The number of students で、動詞の形が変わるのはなぜですか？
A. 主語の“核（中心の名詞）”が違うからです。①a number of ＋ 複数名詞＝「多くの〜」（＝many）。ここでの a number of は「たくさんの」という数量の飾りで、核は後ろの students（複数）。だから動詞は複数：A number of students are absent.（多くの生徒が欠席している）。②the number of ＋ 複数名詞＝「〜の数」。こちらは the number（その数）が主役で、of students は「何の数か」を説明する飾り。核は the number（単数の数値）。だから動詞は単数：The number of students is decreasing.（生徒の数が減っている）。見分けの合図は a（多く＝many）か the（特定の一つの数）か。これは、there is / are が直後の名詞に一致するのと同じ、主述の一致の一般原則です。

4. つまずきやすい形
(1) a number of ＝ many（複数）
a number of ＋ 複数名詞は「多くの」。核は後ろの複数名詞なので、動詞は複数にします。
(2) the number of ＝ 数（単数）
the number of ＋ 複数名詞は「〜の数」。核は the number（一つの数値）なので、動詞は単数です。
(3) a / the が合図
迷ったら冠詞を見ます。a（＝many）なら複数、the（特定の一つの数）なら単数。a large / small number of も複数扱いです。
(4) 後ろは複数名詞
どちらも number of の後ろは複数名詞（可算名詞の複数形）。the number of student のような単数は誤りです。
